A Jamawar is a special type of shawl. It was made by hand with needles. Its involve only needle work no machines work at all. Some shawls took a couple of decades to complete. Historically in Mughal period when machines were not there, Rafoogars or artists use needles to create designs and patterns. Same as while coloring the shawl they use natural colors of dries flowers. So it takes several years to complete a single shawl. Original Jamawar shawls sell for high prices. Kings and riches bought these as woven fabric and wears it as a gown or using to a wrap or shawl.

The high end variety of Jamawar shawl is, Kanika Jamawar made with weaving sticks and the patterns are so finely done that front and back of the shawl are identical. While Pashmina shawl is made of Pashmina yarn is obtained from goats. Pure Pashmina is usually very expensive. In some cases the pashmina yarn is blended with silk threads, fur or other wools to come up with an exclusive range of beautiful pashmina shawls and scarf. These are very soft. Paisley shawls are usually woven in the wall-hanging technique, these shawl were made in the time of Great Napoleon. The patterns reveal some of the most complex and particular designs highlighted by delicate combination of colors. Durkha shawl is a very special kind of shawl it is made in a way that the design on the both side reveal as the same. While Ek-Rukha shawl has design on one side and threads on the other side. Romal shawl is a square shape shawl.

Jamawar, or grown piece, is a special type of shawl made in Kashmir. "Jama" means robe and "war/var" is chest and metaphorically body.[citation needed] The best quality of Jamawar is built with Pashmina. The brocaded parts are woven in similar threads of silk or polyester. Most of the designs seen today are floral, with the kairy as the predominant motif. Historically handmade items, some shawls took a couple of decades to complete; consequently, original Jamawar shawls are highly valued. Modern, machine-made Jamawar prints, produced in cities such as Kashmir and other parts of Pakistan, Punjab cost less to buy but handmade Jamawar are very expensive.

Traders introduced this Chinese silk cloth to India, mainly from Samarkand and Bukhara and it gained immense popularity among the royalty and the aristocracy. Kings and nobles bought the woven fabric by the yard, wearing it as a gown or using it as a wrap or shawl. Jamawar weaving centres in India developed in the holy cities and the trade centres. The most well known Jamawar weaving centre is Kashmir, Pakistan and Punjab.

Due to its rich and fine raw materials, the rich and powerful merchants used Jamawar and noblemen of the time, who could not only afford it but could even commission the weavers to make the fabric for them, as in the case of the Mughals. Emperor Akbar was one of its greatest patrons. He brought many weavers from East Turkestan to Kashmir.

Many rafoogars based in Delhi have their ancestral roots in Najibabad and links with the darning community there. Having inherited the darning skills, they are skilled in repairing a variety of shawls. We undertake the darning of all types of Kashmiri Shawls including Jamawar Shawls, ek-Rukha (One-sided) and do-Rukha(two Sided) shawls. Some pashmina shawls have a warp of pashmina yarn and weft of silk yarn.
